Sorting!

So, everyone at this point knows about Sorting characters by the Hogwarts Houses from Harry Potter (I think at this point even people who have never read or watched Harry Potter know their Hogwarts House.)

But of course that's not the only option! There are lots of other ways to sort.

You can sort your characters by:

What am I leaving out? What other fictional canons have built-in Sorting?

(Me, I keep trying to put MDZS characters into Heptarchate factions, but I always run up against the fact that Nirai Wuxian would inevitably agree to be one of Hexarch Kujen's backup hosts, and then I just get sad.)

Raksura castes!

I've also seen Fire Emblem elemental affinities, Black Jewels castes and Magic: The Gathering colors, though I don't have links at hand for those.

ETA: Also Homestuck classpects! And troll blood castes to a lesser extent, but mostly it's classpects.

All the World of Darkness books have built in Sorting. Werewolf, Mage, etc.

The Nine Houses of the Veil from Ninth House (Lethe, Skull & Bones, Scroll & Key, Berzelius, St. Elmo’s, Book & Snake, Wolf’s Head, Aurelian and Manuscript)

Also DnD classes could be fun.

Homestuck has A Lot: Prospit vs Derse, the hemospectrum (like the zodiac but More), classpects...it even has four different kinds of romance. Look at this glorious mess. They even made an official extended Zodiac sorter with two hundred and twenty eight signs.

There's also the jewels in the Black Jewels series, as I recall they're basically just power levels but labelled with jewels which makes them cooler.

Ajahs from Wheel of Time!!

Rey from Star Wars is Green, but she has only one Warder (and it's Finn).

Leia is Blue, Padme is Gray.

DnD classes were mentioned, but alignments are a classic, too.

There's the morning and evening split for sedoretu AUs, from the Ursula K. Leguin story whose name is escaping me right now. Though that tends to be more of a game of "how can I split up my favorite characters so my preferred pairs can be together".

Figuring out the Newsflesh blogging AUs for characters is one I've enjoyed before -- Newsies, Stewarts, Irwins, Aunties, and Fictionals.

It's not as built in a Sorting , but I've seen Leverage AU discussions often take the form of "who is which: the hitter, the hacker, the grifter, the thief, and the mastermind".

(And even though it's less canon-based, I will take any excuse to bring up my favorite variant of Sorting, which is Sorting Hat Chats -- it doesn't quite fit, but it's my personal favorite for discussing and explaining view of characters, if you just want an interesting rabbit hole to go down and debate. :D)

My main game fandom, Seven Kingdoms, has er, exactly what the name implies. The main plot is a diplomatic summit between the seven kingdoms. Since I'm obsessed with crossing it over with every other fandom, and with all my own OCs, I like to think about which kingdom a character might come from. But it's not exactly the same as Hogwarts houses, because sometimes the assignment has to do with the character's plot and not their personality, or it has an ironic tension, or something like that.

I also like to think about some day writing something that has that kind of categorization, because it's addictive and great for drawing in a fandom, but I'm not quite there yet.

You can also sort people by their Ilvermorny House (The American Wizarding School). They are Horned Serpent (those with a strong mind - scholars), Wampus (those with a strong body - warriors), Thunderbird (those with a strong soul - adventures) and Pukwudgie (those with strong heart - healers).

I also sort characters by the faction they would join in Devil Survivor 2, but that is a bit spoilery.

You can also sort by bending element: Air/Earth/Fire/Water.

And I wonder if daemons could be some kind of sorting too: are they dog persons? Do they have bird daemon? Some kind of prey animal? I feel that when people choose a daemon for a character, they mean something by it, even if it's subjective and not really clean cut.
