So, everyone at this point knows about Sorting characters by the Hogwarts Houses from Harry Potter (I think at this point even people who have never read or watched Harry Potter know their Hogwarts House.)
But of course that's not the only option! There are lots of other ways to sort.
You can sort your characters by:
- Hogwarts House (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff)
- Hept/Hexarchate faction (Rahal, Andan, Shuos, Nirai, Vidona, Kel, Liozh)
- Great Houses of Westeros (Targaryen, Stark, Lannister, Arryn, Tully, Greyjoy, Baratheon, Tyrell, Martell)
- Cultivation sects (Wen, Lan, Jiang, Jin, Nie, + various smaller sects)
- Camp Half-Blood Cabins (Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Ares, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Hermes, Dionysus, + the lesser gods.)
- The Nine Houses from the Locked Tomb (1-9)
- Vampire: The Masquerade clans (Brujah, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Toreador, Tremere, Ventrue, etc.)
- The Houses of the Court of Night-Blooming Flowers (Alyssum, Balm, Bryony, Camellia, Cereus, Dahlia, Eglantine, Gentian, Heliotrope, Jasmine, Mandrake, Orchis and Valerian)
- Districts of Panem (1-13)
- Divergent factions (Abnegation, Dauntless, Erudite, Candor, Amity)
What am I leaving out? What other fictional canons have built-in Sorting?
(Me, I keep trying to put MDZS characters into Heptarchate factions, but I always run up against the fact that Nirai Wuxian would inevitably agree to be one of Hexarch Kujen's backup hosts, and then I just get sad.)

I've also seen Fire Emblem elemental affinities, Black Jewels castes and Magic: The Gathering colors, though I don't have links at hand for those.
ETA: Also Homestuck classpects! And troll blood castes to a lesser extent, but mostly it's classpects.

Also DnD classes could be fun.

Date: 2020-03-22 05:45 am (UTC)There's the morning and evening split for sedoretu AUs, from the Ursula K. Leguin story whose name is escaping me right now. Though that tends to be more of a game of "how can I split up my favorite characters so my preferred pairs can be together".
Figuring out the Newsflesh blogging AUs for characters is one I've enjoyed before -- Newsies, Stewarts, Irwins, Aunties, and Fictionals.
It's not as built in a Sorting , but I've seen Leverage AU discussions often take the form of "who is which: the hitter, the hacker, the grifter, the thief, and the mastermind".
(And even though it's less canon-based, I will take any excuse to bring up my favorite variant of Sorting, which is Sorting Hat Chats -- it doesn't quite fit, but it's my personal favorite for discussing and explaining view of characters, if you just want an interesting rabbit hole to go down and debate. :D)

Date: 2020-03-23 01:29 am (UTC)I think the Leverage ones definitely count, since they're at least sort of canon! I hadn't realized Newsflesh had something that would work- suddenly I am even more tempted to read them...

Date: 2020-03-23 01:26 am (UTC)There's something really compelling about that kind of sorting in worldbuilding, isn't there? As evidenced by how many examples we've found! When I was in middle school I developed a post-apocalyptic world where everybody had one of seven different magical styles as encoded in eye color, and I still go back and play in it every now and then!

Date: 2020-03-23 10:41 am (UTC)Curiously, the thing that's most compelling to me about writing sorting systems isn't being able to sort myself and my friends, but that it gives me an excuse to color-code characters, which helps cement them in my mind. Assigning colors to things just helps me make order in my thoughts somehow.

Date: 2020-03-23 05:43 pm (UTC)And I wonder if daemons could be some kind of sorting too: are they dog persons? Do they have bird daemon? Some kind of prey animal? I feel that when people choose a daemon for a character, they mean something by it, even if it's subjective and not really clean cut.
