Hi all! [community profile] smallweb is going to be hosting Small Web September, which is a low-commitment challenge to work on a smallweb project of choice during the month of September.

This could be editing personal archive/shrine, setting up a fediverse instance, checking out geminispace, or anything else that fits into the wide definition of "small web".

as the title says, i successfully deployed ao3 in production through docker and wrote a whole guide on how to do it. i know it mostly works because i did it once, wrote as i went, then did it all over again following my own instructions and then tweaked the guide as needed. if that's all nonsense to you then uh it's just nerd tech stuff. this is useful if you want to host your own site on the ao3/otw-archive code

the guide is on my own site hosted on the ao3 code called superlove, it's invite only and for people i know for now but if we've talked before and you want in just ask me. find the guide here! if you need help just comment here or there or private message me and we'll work something out

if this is not appropriate for this comm feel free to delete it or something i just wanted to share it to be helpful since i personally know how hellish it is to deploy otw-archive

i've been archiving (mostly 100px) icons from livejournal and other sites for a couple years now, and i've finally made my archive publicly available. i've worried about doing this because i know archiving other people's work without permission is a touchy topic, to say the least, but i've mostly archived posts from over a decade ago, and i figure that if anyone wants their icons removed from this archive, i can easily remove them. this archive is self hosted on my own server so it might go down from time to time but i'll always try to get it back online as soon as i can.

if anyone wants their work removed from this archive please message me and i will remove it immediately. this is something i'm very passionate about but it's also important to me that i respect people's wishes so i will remove anything that the owners do not want on here.

the archive can be found here. i hope this is ok to share in this community.

a follow up to my post about downloading photobucket embedded images without watermarks: i now have a video demonstration of how this works, if a visual aid is helpful for anyone to understand the process. it was kind of an oversight on my part to use flashing gif icons as part of the tutorial though, so if it's needed i'll record a new video with static icons. i hope someone finds this useful!

video is embedded below, text tutorial and a download for the video can be found here

i'm not sure if i've posted this before (though i did do a search), so apologies if i have, but some time ago i wrote up a guide to archiving embedded photobucket images without the watermark. it's still working and i regularly use it so i thought i'd promote it when archival efforts for older sites are underway even more so now than when i wrote the guide.

it requires a command line tool, but it's cross-platform and doesn't have much of a learning curve. you can find the guide in my journal here.

There is a community that is dedicated to being a directory of people on DW who post fic on their journal and/or community. So it's a good place to browse to find people, and to put yourself out there as someone who is here to be found. [community profile] dwfanfic

Another signal boost: tl;dr fanfiction.net has been having some technical issues and it doesn't look like the staff is actively maintaining it, so it's a good idea to download yours and others' fics if possible. What I especially want to call your attention to is the last reblog: fichub.net lets you download even multi-chapter works as an EPUB (or other formats) with one click, which is a lot better than trying to do it manually (FFN has some defenses against copy-pasting and right-click/save, presumably to prevent plagiarism). You can even use this when you're not trying to archive stuff!

If you modded LiveJournal communities back in the day, please consider archiving them to Dreamwidth NOW. So much 2000s internet history lives there, and if LJ falls off the internet (as it very well might, depending on how things go in Russia in the near future), links will break and vast amounts of it will be lost. Wayback Machine only captures public posts; a Dreamwidth import can pull in locked posts and comments, and allow people to view them by joining the comm.

If you don't want to go to the hassle yourself, I will happily do it for you - just DM [personal profile] tenlittlebullets on DW and temporarily add [profile] 10littlebullets on LJ as a community mod. I can do it under this account, a catchall archivist account, or a specific one created just for the comm. If you want the Dreamwidth version to be co-maintained or transferred to your DW account, I can also do that.

If Dreamwidth's importer locks up, as it might if there's an archiving stampede, this Tumblr post (+reblogged mirror just in case) has instructions for exporting comments in XML format. LJ still has a built-in page that lets you do the same for posts. Dreamwidth won't let you import from these XML files, but they're still human-readable and can probably be imported to Wordpress if you want to host an archive later.

(Pre-emptive permission: Feel free to link, copy, repost, and spread this post wherever you want. Also feel free to translate it into any language you want. I would be both gratified and extremely relieved if any Russian speakers want to spread it around to people who were active on ЖЖ back in the day and are in a position to safely back up their old content; the offer to help with importing is still open, even if we have to communicate through Google Translate!)
