fictional_fansOkay, if you were loading your phone up with offline copies of longfic (20,000-300,000 words) from A03 to keep as your stash of emergency re-reads, what would you pick? Any fandom, pairing, age, no shame or standards except 'it's a good thing to have on hand when you really need a longfic'.
I am trying to come up with a list, but it's all coming stuff I've re-read too often lately, so I need some new blood or old blood I've forgotten.
(I have Murderbot, Barrayar, T. Kingfisher and Young Wizards as my emergency profic longreads on there, but I want some fanfic to pad it out.)

Also one of my all time favorite Barrayar fic is Aral Vorkosigan's Dog by Philomytha... it's gen, a retelling of Shards of Honor from Illyan's POV. Just stellar. It's canon as far as I'm concerned.

Date: 2018-08-09 03:34 pm (UTC)I recall enjoying ScottWashburne's Anny Payne series of Vorkosigan fanfic, so Tales from the Academy (T, 190k) and Lieutenants (T, 217k) would also be there – I think these two would be readable as original milSF? Other Vorkosigan fanfic would be Glishara's Guerrilla (M, 78k) and Hydra-Headed (M, 24k), because I like a good action scene. Perhaps I should learn to write some as well.
Then I'd also put on ancient_moonshine's Nirvana in Fire (TV) fic Thaumatrope (E, 34k), because I've been meaning to read it forever and I betaed parts of the fucker. Technically an edge case but uh I've read parts. It's a Pacific Rim fusion! My friend wrote it! – Other NIF fic I'd place there would be Red Heart and White Sword (E, 22k), which is a lovely post-canon thing, as well as The Bachelor of Da Liang (T, 21k), which, while modern AU, is hilarious. Basically, Xiao Jingyan goes onto one of those dating show things. It's funny.
Finally, I'd put in one for The Goblin Emperor. Island_of_Reil's The Winter Emperor (T, 123k), is a wonderfully in-depth canon divergence fic, and the descriptions and prose are to die for.
